New CHS chapter formed!

In June 2006, Hotelies in the northern suburbs of New York decided that they wanted to get more involved in CHS, but were just a little too far from New York City to participate in many of that chapter's events. Therefore, they decided to form their own CHS chapter, the 60th chapter of our global organization. The new, Westchester/Southern Connecticut chapter will serve the needs of the more than 350 Hotelies living in that area. This new chapter's first event, a summer picnic, was held in Orange, CT on August 26th, at the home of Dennis Sweeney, ‘64 and Maria Palacios-Hardes; the picnic was a great success! Dennis cooked-up an incredible meal, complemented by teas donated by John Harney, ’56. Let's all support this new chapter as they continue to build momentum.

CHS West/Fair Raises Money for Save the Children

On the evening of November 7, 2007 the Cornell Hotel Society of Westchester/Fairfield convened at the Silvermine Tavern in Norwalk, Connecticut for a fundraiser to celebrate the connections between Hospitality and Generosity. Live jazz enhanced the old inn ambiance while guests enjoyed wine tasting with cheese followed by a three-course meal. The Silvermine Tavern is owned by Frank Whitman, Jr. Hotel School Class of 1972 and is celebrating its 79th year of hospitality.

Through this event, CHS Westchester/Fairfield raised $5,000 for Westport, CT-based Save the Children, the leading independent organization creating real and lasting change for children in need in the United States and around the world. The local hospitality and real estate communities proved eager to show their generosity and support. Corporate sponsors for the event included HEI Hospitality, Westport Capital Partners, Spinnaker Real Estate Partners, and Merritt Capital Investors. Wines were donated by Merritt Wines, a Norwalk, CT wine shop owned by Michael Sautkalis (SHA ‘85).

Over 60 guests attended the event, including members of CHS leadership such as Linda Schrier-Wirth (SHA ’82) and Michael Schiff (SHA ’87).

In response to CHS’s generosity, Save the Children will use the funds to support an eco-lodge in Bolivia.
